On October 30, 2005, one of the world’s wealthiest, most influential IT businessmen sent an urgent memo to his top engineers, executives and direct reports. It sounded the alarm that a game-changing tsunami was about to hit the IT services world, threatening those who are in the business of delivering “traditional” outsourced IT services. In his e-mail he stated:

“The broad and rich foundation of the Internet will unleash a ‘service wave’ of applications and experiences available instantly over the Internet to millions of users.” He went on to say…

“This coming services wave will be very disruptive…this next generation of the Internet is being shaped by its grassroots adoption and popularization model, and the cost-effective seamless experiences delivered through the intentional fusion of services, software and sometimes hardware.”

He finished by stating, “The next sea of change is upon us.”

In case you haven’t guessed it, that memo was from Bill Gates talking about cloud computing. Since then, Microsoft has shifted its focus so that better than 70% of their internal resources (staff) are now directed towards developing cloud based products and services. Merrill Lynch estimates this wave has grown into a $160 billion tsunami. And investment experts at the Motley Fool Rule Breakers are calling cloud computing “classic disruptive technology” and “one of the most lucrative investment opportunities we’ll ever encounter,” advising their clients to cash in on this incredible economic shift.

Based on my own research, I have to agree. I believe that within the next few years, the IT industry as we know it will change drastically…and quite honestly, this scares the hell out of me. Why? Because my business model is based on helping small IT service companies market themselves. If that channel goes away, so does my business.

Because of this, we are dedicating an entire pre-day session to cloud computing and helping you figure out how to make it a profitable service offering in your business. There will also be multiple sessions, examples and topics on how to make money with cloud computing and multiple vendors on site that you can meet with and learn what they can do to bring your cloud offering together.

Tom Malesic of Pennsylvania-based EZSolution celebrates his new position as Robin Robins’ Spokesperson as he poses in his newly awarded Mercedes alongside his Marketing Manager, Rich Crockett and his marketing coach, Robin Robins, President of Technology Marketing Toolkit, Inc.

Franklin, TN – April 4, 2011 – Technology Marketing Toolkit, Inc. – It’s no secret, times are tough. But despite the new economic environment, there’s a distinct group of IT Business owners who are not only growing their businesses but are actually experiencing drastic increases in net profit, new clients and recurring revenue.

Over 400 of the nation’s top experts in the IT industry recently gathered in Nashville, Tennessee to share best practices and recession-proof marketing strategies for their small businesses. The highlight of this annual seminar was the “Better Your Best” contest, in which members of Robin Robins’ Producers Club Coaching Program competed for a new car and the chance to be Robin Robins’ Spokesperson. The contestants all shared the marketing strategies that they’ve used to achieve a combined average increase of 356% in net profits, and a combined average increase of 50% in monthly recurring revenue.

After months of preparation, and despite some hefty competition, Tom Malesic of EZSolution, along with his right-hand man, Rich Crocket, accepted the keys to a brand new Mercedes and the distinguished title of “Better Your Best” 2011 contest winner. Robin Robins, President of Technology Marketing Toolkit, Inc., awarded Tom his prize and his new title during the 2011 Marketing & Money-Making Boot Camp, held March 23rd-26th, in recognition of his exceptional growth in sales and profits.

“It’s hard to believe how much Robin has changed my business in only 2 years,” stated an elated Tom Malesic. “She taught me how to create monthly recurring revenue, how to be the expert in my industry and she provided an amazing education on marketing campaigns and strategies. Marketing isn’t just about the individual campaigns. It is the collective marketing efforts that return the big results. Robin has given me opportunities to learn not only about marketing, but also about business. Her program has allowed me to be a better business owner and a better person. I am honored to have won the Mercedes E350 and to be her 2011 spokesperson.”

When asked about her motivation for running this competition, Robin Robins stated, “I love hosting this event every year, and I am honored to have Tom as my new spokesperson, but the true excitement in all of this is knowing that even when times are the toughest they have been in a while, these guys can still produce their greatest successes ever. This is the 4th time we’ve run this competition and every year the judging gets harder. Every single contestant had great numbers and a great story to tell. The monetary results speak for themselves, but the greatest improvement tends to be in their mindset and overall entrepreneurial strategies – the intangible results that change their businesses and lives forever.”

Want a GREAT way to show your clients you appreciate them for just $10? Then you’ll love the video below and the idea I have for how you can use it. But first, let me explain what this is all about, who the guys are in the video and how YOU can use this as a super cheap and unique way to thank your best clients…

Tom Malesic (second from the left in the video) is a long-standing Producers Club Member who is a tremendous marketer. In fact, he’s one of the contestants you’ll get to see at the Boot Camp coming up in March in the “Better Your Best” competition for Spokesperson of my company and the new car. Tom runs an IT services business that sells outsourced IT projects, managed services, web design and SEO. This last year he grew his company substantially and generated an amazing 527% increase in NET PROFIT! Wow!

Last week Tom called me for some advice on how to promote a service he does – a singing quartet valentine seranade. For as little as $10, Tom and his friends will create and deliver a signing “telegram” by e-mail. For a little bit more, they can also deliver it by phone or in person (if you live in the Lancaster area). All the money you pay them goes to charity so it’s double good.

Watch the video and let me know if you can think of any other creative ways to use this. Then go to this web site to order one for your best clients: http://redrosevalentines.com.

If you toss a solid gold brick into a crowd, there will be one of four reactions…which of these is you?

The first guy doesn’t recognize it for what it is. Because he has no clue what a gold brick is, he hunkers down to protect himself against this thing you've thrown at him. His reaction is to deflect strange, new objects instead of trying to catch them. In doing so, it hits him on the arm. He then turns around and blasts you for throwing a brick at him. He tells anyone who will listen what a jerk you are for throwing bricks! They even consider suing you. You shouldn’t be allowed to go around throwing things at people! He expects you to take your brick with you so he doesn’t trip on it later.

Another guy recognizes it is a gold brick, tries to grab it, but misses. It hits him in the foot because he let it slip through his hands. He recognizes it IS a gold brick, but he’s embarrassed that he couldn't catch it. He decides to let it sit on the ground because he’s too busy rubbing his foot and looking around to see if anyone else saw him drop the brick to do anything with it. While looking around he notices no one else caught it, so he feels better about himself. He sees the first guy complaining and decides to agree with him. You are a jerk for throwing bricks! This guy is happy to have found someone else who thinks throwing gold bricks is unprofessional. Now they can start a chat room.

A third guy also recognizes it's a gold brick. He actually catches it, but then stands there holding it, scratching his head, trying to figure out what to do with it. After all, why are you giving him a gold brick? Why not diamonds? Why not cash? Wouldn’t it just be easier if you sold the brick for him and handed him the check? How is he going to use this thing? Now he’s mad because he realizes he’s going to have to work to make any money with it. It's heavy and he has to lug it around and keep track of it. Someone might steal it, and now he has to worry about that! He has to get it appraised and then he has to sell it. He doesn’t know how to sell gold bricks because he’s never done that before. What if he makes a mistake? Darn you! You're making work for this guy! He doesn’t have time to figure out how to actually make money with gold bricks! This is stupid! He ends up frustrated and mad at you because you because you didn’t make it easy. He decides the brick is more hassle than it's worth and gives the brick back to you. He goes and joins the other two guys to see if they have an easier way of making money.

The last person is the rarest in the crowd. He sees and catches the gold brick because he is always looking for a good opportunity. He knows you have to be on the alert for opportunities, ready to take action or they’ll pass you by. He rushes to grab the brick the moment you toss it and instantly realize the value. He’s holding a solid gold brick! This thing is worth a lot of money, and he didn't have it a moment ago! He instantly gets busy cashing it in and using the found gold. He takes it and multiplies the value. He comes back, thanks you and wants more! He really appreciates that you just threw him a gold brick! How exciting! He’s so thrilled that he decides to tell the other 3 guys huddled together about his good fortune.

But instead of getting matched enthusiasm, all three get sourpuss looks on their face and tell the 4th guy what a fool he is for doing all that work. They secretly think he's being paid by the brick guy to say nice things anyway, so they don't believe a word he says. They all reassure each other that there are no such things as gold bricks. They point out their injuries. They agree that those gold bricks were probably full of lead with gold paint on the outside designed to fool people! Besides, none of them made it work so there MUST be something wrong with those gold bricks. They congratulate each other on how smart they are over the idiot running around collecting gold bricks.

The Moral Of The Story…

I believe it was Henry Ford who observed that when opportunity knocked, it was often rejected as an unwelcome visitor because it showed up in dirty work clothes.

And while most people say they understand that success requires hard work, most are giving that lip service and complaining about the “gold bricks” being tossed to them every day.

The question is, which of the four guys are YOU?

If you believe that your business, customers, or situation is "different" and can't seem to find the "secret" to growing your business because you are too busy, don't have the money, etc., you're probably the first guy. It’s easier to reject opportunities than to grab them. Grabbing opportunities incurs responsibility. Chances are you walk around all day in "instant reject" mode. The minute you hear about a success story – marketing or otherwise – how do you react? Do you instantly think, "that won't work for me?" or "I couldn't do THAT because…"? If so, you are most certainly the first guy.

If you aren’t always searching for more education, to stretch yourself or if you are only half-hearted about growing your business, you’ll be the second guy. You’ll see the opportunities but you’ll let them slip right through your fingers because you’re not prepared mentally to snag ‘em and implement ‘em.

If you’re over analytical, or if you let your fears or doubts take over every time you have to move to the next level (which always requires learning and doing something new), you’ll be the third guy. Mostly this comes from fear of doing something new. People are utterly paralyzed by it. They are also frozen and turned off by anything that looks like a lot of work. This is an emotional reaction to an opportunity, and a highly unproductive one if you let it shut you down.

I like to think most of the folks reading this blog are like the fourth guy, but that just wouldn’t be reality. Every crowd has some complacent, low achievers. Fortunately, I have far more smart, ambitious, high-achievers in the ranks of my client base – and for those of you, I have a warning…

YOU have to guard yourself against are the three previous thugs hanging out trying to rain on your parade. I don’t know why it’s human nature for people to be down on anything they’re not “up” on, but it’s absolutely true. While there certainly IS some value in being a bit skeptical or cynical, being overly negative causes you to overlook many great opportunities because you're simply not open to new ideas.

So, for all the enthusiastic brick catchers, get ready. I’ve got a TON of gold bricks coming your way at the March Boot Camp. Show up ready to catch 'em.

If you want a few GREAT tips on how to boost your managed services or IT service sales to new clients, you’re going to love the interview I’ve posted for download.

But wait! There are two things you need to know about this recorded call BEFORE you listen to it:

This recording is one of the live training sessions I conducted in the Million-Dollar Managed Services Blueprint a few weeks ago which means there will be a few references to prior calls. Also, there isn’t an intro to me or my services and the recording is “raw” and unedited. However, the content is so good that I decided to post it as is.

One of the sales techniques you’ll hear these guys talking about are wedge questions. This is a rather new sales strategy many of my clients have been using to overcome common objections like, “No thanks, we already have someone taking care of our IT,” and the dreaded “I don’t see why I need to pay for someone to monitor and maintain my network – I would rather just pay you when I need you.” It is also a killer way to win sales on the merit of your good services rather than on price; in fact, you’ll be able to quickly get a prospect to see the value in your services over all other competitors. It’s just killer!

Since I know we’re going to have a TON of people asking about this, here’s what I decided to do…

If you want to learn the “wedge” technique, then register for the March 2011 Boot Camp detailed on this web site before December 31st. As a bonus, I’ll give you two training videos that will teach you what the wedge technique is and how to use this strategy to overcome difficult sales objections that constantly crop up and kill your chances of closing more contracts.

Fair Warning: These sales training videos will ONLY be given to those who register for the Boot Camp on or BEFORE December 31st. After that, they go away – sorry, no exceptions!

It’s Thanksgiving already and there are only 37 days left in 2010…

So how’d you do?

Yeah, I know…I should be writing some sappy article about being grateful for all we have or some other Hallmark card sentiment. But let’s face it folks; I’m an entrepreneur and so are the vast majority of folks reading this article. That means while most everyone else is goofing off pretending to work, shopping and heading home early, the rest of us are hard at work cleaning up messes, finishing projects and trying to squeeze in one more e-mail or “to-do” before we call it a day.

That’s not to say I’m not grateful for the long list of things I’m blessed with. But I don’t know of any business owner who, right alongside that list of things to be grateful for doesn’t also have a long list of complaints, problems, irritants and frustrations that hang around our necks, desperately needing fixing and causing us to be very UNgrateful. I have days when one minute I’m high-fiving the staff and the next minute pulling my hair out over the next crisis and wondering what I ever did to deserve this new steaming pile of stress.

That said, I DO think it’s important for all of us to take note of what IS right in our business and our lives as much as what’s wrong so we can build on it. To paraphrase Dr. Kramer, a penny held to the eye can block the sun, and two held over both eyes will put you in pitch black – and it’s very difficult to be an energetic, creative problem solver when your sitting in the dark, miserable, alone and unmotivated. Plus, you can’t build on success if you never notice it.

On the other hand, there’s no good sense in pretending everything is all ‘rainbows and kittens’ and ignore or react slowly to storm clouds rapidly gathering or a current festering problem that needs to be addressed – and if you don’t like the results you generated this year in new clients, sales, profits or personal income, then there’s not time like the present to get working on it.

Below is the worksheet to a strategy exercise I’ve taken clients through at the end of the year to clarify what’s working, what’s not and how to prioritize your projects and activities to maximize the results you are getting in your business. It should only take you a few minutes to complete, but it will give you tremendous insights as you move into 2011.

Of course if you really want 2011 to a be a stellar year, I would strongly recommend you enroll for the upcoming Boot Camp in March where all of my top, most successful IT business owner clients will gather to collaborate, discuss and learn key strategies for getting more clients and making more money in their IT consulting business. You can do that from this web page now and get $600 off in Early Bird registration as well as a $1,000 Sales Training program that I've never released before: www.robinsbigseminar.com

To quote Jim Rohn, you can’t change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction.

Download the worksheet here:

We recently conducted a survey of over 1,000 VARs, managed services providers and IT service business owners and asked the following question:

“What do you feel is the #1 biggest obstacle holding you back from growing your IT services business?”

The answer given by 48% of those who responded was “Non-existent or ineffective marketing and sales systems.” Now before you think I swayed the survey by using a drop down or multi-choice list to force this answer, you’re wrong. I left it as a completely open-ended question. And actually, I’m both surprised and delighted that “the economy” didn’t take the #1 spot; that tells me we have a crowd of folks who are taking responsibility for their own business results. Groovy.

Want to know what was second? “Lack of time,” as cited by 28% of those responding.

So, why am I sharing this with you?

Because this April I’m going to hold the annual IT Sales & Marketing Boot Camp — and I need your opinion on something…more specifically:

***************************************************

“What would be the single most important topic you would like me to research and present on?”

***************************************************

Even if you don’t think you can make it (and yes, it breaks my heart to hear that), I’d still value your opinion. You see the problem I have is that I could cover SO MANY topics that it kinda gets difficult picking which ones will have the most impact. So instead of guessing, I thought I would post this out here and invite all my clients and subscribers to comment.

Would you please take a moment to leave a comment below answering the question above? I REALLY appreciate your help!

Franklin, TN-April 20, 2010 – Technology Marketing Toolkit, Inc. – After months of preparation and some heavy competition, Brad and Victoria Myers of Myers Networks Solutions accepted the keys to a brand new BMW and the distinguished title of “Better Your Best” 2010 contest winner. Robin Robins, President of Technology Marketing Toolkit, Inc., awarded them this prize and the position of Spokesperson during the 2010 Marketing & Money-Making Boot Camp, held April 14-17 in Nashville, Tennessee, for achieving exceptional growth in sales and profits.

While many folks were scrambling to complete their tax returns on time, over 350 of the nation’s top experts in the IT industry gathered to share best practices and recession-proof marketing strategies for their small businesses. The highlight of this annual seminar was the “Better Your Best” contest which featured members of Robin Robins’ Genius League Coaching Program as they competed for the Spokesperson Position and a new car with show-and-tell marketing strategies they’ve used to achieve a combined average increase of 149% in net profits, an astounding 1,083% increase in clients on a recurring revenue basis, and a 158% increase in monthly recurring revenue.

“We are so excited about this! This has been a goal of ours for 2 years,” stated a proud Victoria Myers. “We are honored to accept the role of Spokesperson for 2010 and we are super fans of Robin!”

“I have always challenged my clients to think big and create the business and income that others only dream about, regardless of what the economy is doing. In times like these, it takes true leadership and courage to relentlessly pursue growth while everyone else lets fear and excuses hold them back. But Brad and Victoria Myers are perfect examples of how anything is possible; and using the low-cost marketing strategies I have taught them, they and the other candidates have achieved increases in sales and profits that others think are simply impossible,” Robin Robins says. “Choosing the winner of this contest is always a difficult process. Each of the contestants demonstrated tremendous growth and success over the last year. They all deserve recognition for their incredible results.”
